Unique seven bedroom, eight bathroom castle house, right at the top of the hill town of Cetona, surrounding by a beautiful 2 acre garden. Enchanting setting.
Tuscany-Southeast/Val D'Orcia Villa 14
History meets decadent luxury, accompanied by the regal surroundings of the majestic Tuscan countryside. Welcome to the sheer opulence of astle Rock. Set imperially on a hilltop, with commanding views of vineyards and olive trees, this restored castle is the crowning glory above the medieval streets of historic Cetona. Indeed, they almost appear to be prostrating themselves before it.
This 13th-century stronghold incorporates an elegant 18th-century villa. Bushes dramatically frame its entrance path through a vaulted tunnel whose niches contain Etruscan tombs. Theatrical lighting reveals an ancient amphitheatre that forms the first of numerous terraces.
You feel you should doff your cap as you enter the grand hall with an imposing crystal chandelier. Its succession of living spaces cannot but impress. A travertine marble staircase leads to seven large bedrooms, spread across two floors, all with impeccable marbled en suites. Every bedroom is sumptuously decorated, merging original antiques and fine fabrics.
The private swimming pool in the lush gardens has been crafted out of ancient Roman stones found in North Africa. There are several furnished outside areas to enjoy dining or entertaining while admiring the views that stretch to Mount Cetona and the Umbrian Hills.
You also have exclusive access to a separate accommodation. Here there's a further living room, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and sauna. On its lower ground floor a vast room fit for a manor is ideal for throwing a party or celebrating a special occasion.
And staying at CAstle Rock there's plenty to celebrate.
The property has walls less than 1 metre high. Young children, especially those under six years old, should be supervised an adult in these areas.

I want to give you both a more elaborate description of our experience, for it was truly all and more than I had hoped for. The villa is elegant and grand - the grounds, the views, the stone, the furnishings - and surprisingly comfortable at the same time. The layout of the rooms and bathrooms had the equality and relationships that I wanted (but which I had such a hard time picturing; I do recommend that you do a floor plan that better shows the placement of the bedrooms and the en suite baths/showers). All rooms had perfect Tuscan views, the legacy of being a lookout fort at the top of the hill. I think the absence of air-conditioning is a plus. The house did stay cool all day while closed up, and the evenings and mornings had the special quality of the local sounds (cock, church bells, dogs) and fresh air. No screens. I loved that. Most ideal was the sense of rural privacy and views while we were only minutes from the town square. The steep and long stairs were the best and the worst part - good exercise for us, but perhaps tough for some. A dash in for coffee and bread in the morning, gelato in the evening. We ate dinner in town three nights, repeatedly at the same place (Il Nilo), where we felt like regulars. The housekeeper cooked for us three nights, and all was perfect Italian food - simple and delicious. Eating outside at one of the many tables was dreamy. The staff were excellent. I am so glad we got the local babysitter. Bianca was not only the sitter, but our host in many ways. Her day job is working for the Tourist Office, so she was helpful planning day trips and especially translating with Vassily, the custodian, and Lydia, the housekeeper/cook. Bianca set out the extensive welcome spread the day we arrived. We also very much appreciated the presence of Maryse Pen, your local rep. She did our arrival shopping, met us on our arrival day, and repeatedly called to check on us. She is charming, and it was a comfort knowing a local person was looking out for us. I could go on, but I'll save it for reports to our friends.
