Venice Villa 12

Torcello is a charming Venetian villa built at the end of the 17th century. Ruins of the Romanesque church of S Giovanni can be admired in the of the villa that have been restored by the International Save Venice Fund.

The villa is the perfect property for those loving Venetian architecture and looking to spend a week away from the crowds while being able to visit the Venetian Lagoon. On Torcello Island, guests will be able to enjoy great food at the Locanda Cipriani (one of the gastronomic institutions of the Veneto), admire the spectacular Byzantine mosaics in the  Cathedral of Santa Maria Dell'Assunta, as well as walking in the island natural reserve.

At the villa, guests will be able to relax by the pool, on a small hill in the garden overlooking the Venetian lagoon, or spend time together under the beautiful outside veranda. The owner has furnished this elegant villa with beautiful antique pieces and equipped with modern comforts such as Wi-Fi and Sky TV.

From Torcello it is possible to visit either by vaporetto or by water taxi the islands of the Venetian lagoon, including Burano, which is famous for its lace, and Murano, which is famous for its glass. The centre of Venice can also be reached easily by vaporetto. The vaporetto stop is only a five-minute walk from the villa.

The island of Torcello is the real precursor of Venice. Settled between the fifth and seventh centuries, it became the most prosperous of the early lagoon communities with its own palaces and churches, shipyards and docks, its own nobility and laws. The growth of Venice brought its demise and its current population is now about 110  people. It is probably most famous today for the Locanda Cipriani, one of the gastronomic institutions of the Veneto. The villa, built towards the end of the seventeenth century, is the only villa on Torcello and is surrounded by an enormous garden. Near the house is the Romanesque church of San Giovanni some of whose ruins have been restored by the International Save Venice Fund and which can still be admired in the garden. The villa is beautifully furnished with antiques and equipped with modern comforts such as internet connection (wi-fi) and Sky TV. The swimming pool is on a small hill overlooking the garden. The vaporetto stop is only a five-minute walk from the villa.

Recommended Local Restaurants

Venice requires a little more research into your resaturant choices than most Italian cities, due to the  mass tourism, but good food is avialble, in some cases very good, but usually not at bargain prices. In any case, you can't go wrong at any of our suggestions below:

On Torcello

Locanda Cipriani-Piazza Santa Fosca 29 30142 Torcello, Venezia Italy  Tel  041 730150  https://www.locandacipriani.com/en/  Great little country reataurant on the Venetian island of Torcello. It makes a great lunch excursion to visit Torcello, followed by a leisurely lunch here. Upper moderate to expensive.

Osteria Al Ponte del Diavolo-Fondamenta Borgognoni 10/11, 30142 Torcello  Tel +39041730401  www.osteriaalpontedeldiavolo.com  Another great choice on Torcello. Highly regarded. Moderate prices

Villa 600-Fdm. Borgognoni no 12, Torcello  Tel.  041 52.722.54  www.villa600.it/it/home.htm  Nice food.  Moderate prices.

On Burano and Mazzorbo, 5 minutes from Torcello

Venissa-Fondamenta Santa Caterina 3, 30142 Isola di Mazzorbo  P. 041 52 72 281  http://venissa.it/en/ristorante/#prenotazioni.  This, plainly, is a very special place, located on the island of Mazzorbo. It is on the vapporetto line, the stop before Burano. Here vines are grown and wine produced, as well as vegetables.  A piece of rural life, right in Venice. The restaurant usses many of the ingredients produced here and is just excellent. It has, indeed, earned one Michelin star. Not to be missed. Expensive.

As an alternative, a more affordable and less formal companion piece to its Michelin-starred sister, Venissa Osteria at the same location is an upmarket osteria offering updates on Venetian classics such as marinated fish, duck pasta and bigoli (thick wholemeal pasta with anchovies). For an extra treat, splash out on a glass of Dorona, the prestigious golden-hued wine varietal only grown here. Make sure you save room for some of Venice's best desserts. Moderate prices at the Osteria.

Trattoria Alla Maddalena-Fondamenta Santa Caterina Mazzorbo 7/b, 30142 Mazzorbo  Tel +39 041 730151 www.trattoriamaddalena.com/en/   Located a short walk from the Mazzorbo's vaporetto stop, here you can savor fish, game and the first fruits of the season. Moderate prices

Al Gatta Nero-Fondamenta Giudecca 88, 30142 Burano  Tel 39 041 730 120  http://gattonero.com  It's not just the photogenic canalside location that marks out this long-running Burano trattoria. For half a century now they've fed everyone from the local postman to famous Burano resident Philippe Starck by selecting the best and the freshest of the morning seafood catch and using it to make perfect versions of local specialities like risotto con i gò ('gò' are gobies, a small but tasty Adriatic fish) or a fritto misto (mixed seafood fry-up) so light it could almost convert me to fried food. The interior is charmingly unreconstructed, but in warm weather the few outside tables are the ones to book. For such a humble place, the wine list is surprisingly well structured.

Riva Rosa-Via San Mauro 296, 30142 Burano  Tel  39 041 730 850  https://www.rivarosa.it  There are few better places for a romantic lunch in Venice than this delightful seafood restaurant on the lace island of Burano. The family that owns the place is part of the dynasty that owns the Emilia lace brand, and the elegantly feminine décor is a good advertisement for their design sense. The chef takes the day's seafood catch and turns it into excellent, unfussy Venetian dishes like risotto al gò (with goby, a local fish), spaghetti with clams and mussels, turbot baked with potatoes. It's not cheap, but you're paying for the position, the canalside tables, the professional service, and the sheer quality of the ingredients. If you're looking to pop a question – or simply want to impress your better half – they have a panoramic single table for two on the altana, or roof terrace, which can be booked, with dedicated waiter service, for an all-in price of €150 a head, wine included.

On Murano, 10 minutes away

Acquastanca-Fondamenta Manin 48 Murano Island  Tel  041 319 51 25  www.acquastanca.it/homepage-en/  A modern sensibility imbues both the decor and the menu at this wonderful little restaurant. A knowing array of old-fashioned Murano mirrors adorns a wall, while birds perch on artfully arranged twigs on another. Seafood features prominently on a menu that includes fresh flavour-filled takes on the classic Venetian bean soup, octopus with chickpeas and a panoply of pasta. Moderate prices

Away from the crowds! Spent a pleasant week in this beautiful villa in Torcello. It's a very quiet and leafy little island and is a pleasant change to the busier areas of Venice. The property itself is very fascinating.
